Great song. Great song.

Another Old Traditional Navajo Love Song

This is traditional Navajo love song sung by another famous Navajo singer, Davis Mitchell called "Beautiful Girl From Afar." It's found on the album "Navajo Singer Sings For You."

It is a non-ceremonial social song typically sung during public events, song and dances, or during school performances. Only Davis Mitchell is known for singing this song.

This song is done in the typical styling of traditional Navajo social songs, minimal words in between long chants. Loosely translated, the song says:

Shoo at'ééd...
Look, girl...

Dooládó' sha'...
My oh my...

T'óó ga' nizhóní láa ndi
You're pretty but...

...nikéé' ga' nízaad!
...its far to follow you home!

This is another image from the Blair collection. The photograph is simply titled, "Young Man" an depicts a Navajo male wearing modern American clothing but with some Navajo bling. Great photograph!

Excerpt from website:

Navajo woman wearing a long, fluted skirt and a velveteen blouse reflecting the Spanish influence. Adorning her blouse are Winged Liberty Head dimes also known as Mercury dimes. Minted between 1916 and 1945, each dime weighs 2.5 grams and is 90% silver and 10% copper. Its designer, Adolph A. Weinman, intended the wings surrounding her cap to symbolize liberty of thought.

This is a great website on the Navajo people. The Blairs seemed to be genuine in their appreciation and respect for the Navajo people, I appreciate their photographs. Enjoy the images of southwestern beauty. Blessings.
